Math Teacher for Dr. Frances A Karnes Summer Program for Academically Talented Youth

March 25, 2011
Hello everyone!

Welcome to my blog.  I decided I needed to do something to keep my website fresh so there would be a reason to keep coming back.  I do alot of reading, and I recently read that it is recommended that professionals keep a blog.

Today is a fabulous day to start a blog.  The sun is shining.  The birds are chirping.  And I just got hired on as one of the math teachers for the Dr. Frances A Karnes Summer Program for Academically Talented Youth!  I can't describe how excited I am!

For those of you unfamiliar with the program, Dr. Karnes heads the Center for Gifted Studies in the College of Education and Psychology department on the Southern Miss campus.  It's a series of enrichment programs designed to help gifted students excel.  During the summer there are three programs:  Leadership Studies, Summer Gifted Studies, and the Summer Program for Academically Talented Youth.  The first two are one-week session, but the ATY Program lasts three weeks.  During that three-week program, students earn high school credit for a course.  Students taking math earn credit through individually-paced self-study and can potentially complete more than one course depending on how fast they go.

I will be the math teacher for the lower-level maths (pre-Algebra - Algebra II).  I am particularly excited about this opportunity due to the large role the Gifted Studies Center has played in my education.  I earned high school credit in geometry when I was a student in the program.  I have since returned as a residence counselor for the three programs when I was in college.  It will be great to continue the legacy by becoming a teacher for the program.  I look forward to this summer!
